Cyclamen is one of the most beautiful wildflowers of the European countryside. Five species of cyclamen are found in Greece. It is a perennial plant with purple flowers or, more rarely, white and characteristic heart-shaped leaves with impressive colors. Some species of cyclamen bloom in Spring and some others in Autumn. They grow from coastal areas to altitudes of over 1000 meters.
The most common species of cyclamen in Greece is the Greek cyclamen. This particular cyclamen blooms in the autumn period and has dense purple flowers. It grows in areas with low altitude and is particularly widespread in wasteland areas. The also common cyclamen, the Cyclamen of the Kissophyllum, grows at higher altitudes than the previous one and its flowering period is also in the fall. Its difference with the Cyclamen of the Graecus is that its leaves are not heart-shaped but form slight angles.
Cyclamen does not need excessive watering – however, this must be done regularly and the soil must have good drainage so that its roots do not rot. Hence, we are very careful not to let water stagnate where we have planted it – in the soil or the pot.
It is good to fertilize cyclamen once a week with the special liquid fertilizer for flowering plants sold in specialized stores.
